# What’s the cost of bad B2B messaging?

Bad B2B messaging wastes time, weakens campaigns and leaves buyers unconvinced. Here’s where the costs show up, and how to find them in your own marketing.

![What's the cost of bad B2B messaging](https://b2bcopywriter.uk/hubfs/Whats%20the%20cost%20of%20bad%20b2b%20messaging.png)

TL;DR

Bad B2B messaging leaves buyers unclear about who a product is for, why it matters or why they should choose it. The costs include avoidable rewrites, wasted campaign spend and missed opportunities to build credibility and win new leads.

**\*\*\***

The person who reads your homepage and bounces rarely sends an exit survey explaining why paragraph two left them feeling dead inside.

Which makes B2B messaging an awkward thing to put a price on. Some costs show up in timesheets and conversion reports. Others need a bit more investigation. None becomes clearer by assigning a large, exciting number to **“lost trust”** and sticking it in a presentation.

Here’s where I’d look, based on the businesses and marketing teams I’ve worked with.

## **Start with the work you’re doing twice**

Reviews. Always, the reviews.

The landing page comes back because the benefit isn’t clear. The next version gets closer, but Product says it overclaims and Sales adds the explanation they use on calls. Someone else chirps up asking whether we’ve considered a different audience.

We have now. IN ROUND FOUR.

Every unresolved question has become another writing task. The hours go somewhere, even if the project tracker continues to describe the job as “one landing page”.

For an illustrative calculation, six avoidable hours of rewriting and discussion at a blended internal cost of £50 an hour is £300. Across ten pieces, that’s £3,000 of staff time. Use your own hours and costs, and count each person’s time, including the meetings.

Keep necessary scrutiny in the calculation separate from avoidable rework. Checking a claim is useful. Reopening the audience discussion after design has built the page is a more expensive way to have that conversation.

There’s also the work nobody has time to check. If output keeps arriving and review happens whenever somebody finds a spare afternoon, you can [work out your own content review gap](https://b2bcopywriter.uk/content-review-gap-calculator). The calculator compares the review hours your content needs with the hours you have, then puts a value on the missing capacity.

That figure prices the missing review time. It doesn’t estimate lost deals or declare every unchecked piece a disaster. Some will be fine (a stirring basis for an editorial process).

## **Where bad B2B messaging costs you money**

These are the places I’d investigate. They’re clues, rather than proof that messaging caused every disappointing number

| **Where the cost can hit** | **What to look for** | **How to investigate** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Staff time** | Rewrites keep reopening the audience, promise or supporting evidence | Log the hours and why each round was needed |
| **Campaign spend** | The ad makes a promise the landing page doesn’t explain | Read the journey together, then test a specific change |
| **Buyer progress** | Prospects need repeated explanations of who the product suits or why it matters | Review sales calls, buyer questions and page behaviour together |
| **Investment in positioning** | The agreed reasons to choose you never reach the website or sales material | Compare the messaging framework with the assets buyers see |
| **Credibility and preference** | The content makes claims without support, contradicts itself or sounds interchangeable | Ask buyers what they understood, believed and remembered |

Conversion figures can tell you where to look. They won’t, by themselves, tell you whether the message, offer, traffic or page experience needs attention. Change the argument and the audience at the same time and you’ve given yourself another mystery.

## **How unclear messaging undermines buyer trust**

In my first freelance business, I worked with small accountancy firms and businesses where marketing was one of several jobs someone had inherited.

The obvious problems were spelling and punctuation. Read further and you’d find an argument that wandered, a service whose value never quite emerged, or a website that sounded as though several people had assembled it with different ideas about what the business did.

Those are credibility questions as well as writing questions. If you’re asking someone to trust you with something important, the way you explain yourself deserves some attention. I couldn’t attach a lost-revenue figure to those pages. But I could identify the contradictions and the unanswered questions. That was where I got started.

The same applies to content that is perfectly grammatical and gives the reader no reason to care. The stuff that’s [technically accurate but spiritually dead](https://b2bcopywriter.uk/ai-content-problem). You know the type of thing I’m talking about…

For a buyer weighing up a complicated purchase, feeling understood can mean finding the objection they were worried about, explained in ordinary language, with evidence behind the answer. Confidence can come from a clear limitation as much as a confident claim.

That’s the response I’m looking for when I review the words. Does this make the decision easier? Does it give the reader something useful to remember us for?

“Sounds professional” leaves quite a lot of room for improvement.

## **When the new messaging never reaches the website**

One SaaS business I worked with had been through an exhaustive messaging update. It was a long process, and the result gave the company a clearer way to differentiate itself in a crowded market.

But some landing pages and other content were still caught between the old story and the new one. Conversion on key pages had plateaued. The thinking had moved on, while the buyer-facing argument hadn’t fully caught up.

I worked with marketing teams across EMEA to bring the new messaging into important conversion pages. We focused on the points in the buying journey where those reasons to choose the product needed to land.

We didn’t need every sentence to become a demonstration of the new positioning. We needed the useful differences to appear where they could help someone make a decision.

The client subsequently told me conversion rates had improved on key pages. They didn’t share the figures with me, so I can’t give you a percentage uplift or isolate the contribution of the copy.

But what I can describe is the gap we addressed: the business had done the thinking, but important pages weren’t making enough use of it.

That’s a particularly galling cost. You’ve already paid for the research, the discussions and the decisions. Then the buyer gets a watered-down version, somewhere below a heading that could belong to any of your competitors.

All that work. And still “*innovative solutions*”...

## **Why AI content still needs clear messaging**

The tools have changed since those accountancy websites, but the questions I need answered haven’t changed much.

Who is this for? What matters to them? Why should they believe us? What is this piece supposed to achieve? Why should people give a shit?

If those answers are missing from the brief, I still need to find them, however quickly the draft arrives.

I understand the attraction. Your team is stretched, the calendar’s full and somebody needs three more emails by Thursday. A plausible draft is a relief until someone has to decide whether the argument still holds together.

This is where I’d spend some of the time saved: talking to the people who know the product, and the customers who chose it. Find the objection that kept coming up, the reason someone switched. The detail that changed their mind.

Those conversations give you material to work with. They also give the reader something more useful than another confident paragraph about an increasingly complex landscape (it’s been getting increasingly complex for some time now).

> Here’s how I approach [B2B website copywriting](https://b2bcopywriter.uk/blog/whats-wrong-with-our-marketing-copy), from getting the story straight to getting it onto the page.

## **How to spot messaging gaps in your buying journey**

Before commissioning a new messaging house or rewriting your entire website, look at what buyers encounter now.

Take your homepage, one important landing or product page, and a sales asset used in the same buying journey. Read them together, away from Slack and the comments panel. I get too close to my own website copy, too. Believe me, distance helps.

Ask:

- Who is each piece speaking to, and what does that person need at this point?
- Is the problem recognisable, and does the product’s role in solving it make sense?
- Can you find a specific reason to choose this business?
- Is there evidence for the important claims?
- Do the explanations support each other across the journey?
- Is the next step clear and worth taking?

Different assets will need different levels of detail. A homepage and a technical evaluation guide have different jobs. You’re looking for a story that holds together as the questions get more specific.

If the underlying answers aren’t clear, another headline rewrite will struggle. I’ve covered that distinction in more detail in[what’s wrong with your marketing copy](https://b2bcopywriter.uk/blog/whats-wrong-with-our-marketing-copy?utm_source=chatgpt.com).

Then choose one problem worth fixing. Record the current result, make a defined change and track the outcome that piece is supposed to influence. That might be qualified enquiries, fewer basic clarification questions or less time getting the next asset signed off.

Keep a record of what changed alongside the result. It makes the next decision rather easier.

## **Count what you can. Investigate the rest.**

You can count the hours spent rewriting. You can track whether relevant visitors take the next step. You can ask buyers what made sense, what they believed and what nearly put them off.

You won’t get a complete invoice for every missed opportunity, but you can get far enough to make a better decision about where the next hour, or the next pound, should go.

Start with the page people are reading today. The messaging deck’s already had plenty of attention.
